Why so serious?

My highlights of the week:

Posted by lanktank on November 12, 2009

– I went to an aKing concert and the singer only bitched about the sound check 8 times as opposed to 26 times like he usually does.

– I made chicken pitas using the Nando’s sauce and it was glorious.

– I attended Hailstorm’s grandfather’s 70th birthday party and they made him a cake with 70 candles on it, which he blew out! All 70!

– I watched ‘Back to the Future’ and still liked it.

– I spent a gift voucher which I’ve had a year to do, and DMeister said I’d forget before the cut off… but he was wrong. I used it.

– My boss hasn’t been at work for 3 days.

Exams are over

Posted by lanktank on November 2, 2009

But my hangover is not.

It was DMeister’s birthday party and he had a little shindig (is that how you spell “shindig?” Am I even saying it right?) at his place.

There was a lethal punch, too much tequilla (I just paused. I need a moment, even just to type the word), beer pong and a very hairy mustache.

Night was awesome…. well, what’s remembered of it anyway.

Kappie and C-Dawg were also there. I remember at the beginning of the night, C-Dawg mentioning that he couldn’t stay late because he had an assignment due… then I also remember hours later being on the same beer pong team as him.

DMeister is still man down… it’s nearly 24 hours later.

Good times.

Something rad for a Monday:

Friday at last

Posted by lanktank on February 20, 2009

Yes, it’s been one of those weeks. Those “Will this ever end? I thought there were only 5 working days to each week but I’m almost sure we’ve had 13 already…” weeks.

But the day has arrived. Friday is among us! And I’ve been waiting for this day just as long as Middle Earth did for Frodo to chuck that ring into that lava river in Mordor. (No need to point out that was a dork thing to say; it has been duly noted)

And this weekend, there is so much to do:

Stormers Vs. The Reds tonight – If we don’t win… no, I can’t even think that way. There need not be anymore unjust deaths…

Kappie’s Birthday – This can only end diabolical. The thing is when one goes out with Kappie, there’s always that touch of excitement but also fear… because you never quite know if you’ll make it to the next day… should be a fun night out.

M.O. (mother) wants me to teach her and Dee (father) how to use Skype – Considering it took me two hours in the “How to use a scanner” lesson, I’m taking water and a sleeping bag for this study session. They’ve also just bought a webcam… Christ.

Have a lekker naweek ek se…

Meet the crew: FirstChild

Posted by lanktank on January 22, 2009

I suppose I have to mention him, being family and all.

He’s the favourite, the one I that turn invisible when around, the one people say, “Why can’t you be more like him?” Even though, I’m not a boy….

It’s FirstChild… it also happens to be his birthday, and this is his profile below:

Name: FirstChild

Favourite film: Hearts of Darkness (the making of Apocalypse Now); Oh! What a Lovely War; anything by Wim Wenders;

Favourite reading: The Princeton Companion to Mathematics (a masterpiece); The Economic Consequences of the Peace (Keynes’ finest); L’etranger (need I say more), The Chastening (on the East Asian financial crisis – breathtaking, stunning, marvellous)

Favourite musical artists: Arvo Pärt (and other minimalist composers like Gorecki) ; Miles Davis, Radiohead, Tool, Souad Massi,

Things which interest me: Correcting fallacious Wikipedia entries; the history of the South African transition to democracy; watching online Itunes University video lectures; the Museum of Modern Art; Functional Analysis; financial crises (causes, impacts, repercussions)

A Fine Evening with a Romantic Partner: Shakespeare in the Park, a good meal at a fine French Restaurant, and stimulating conversation about Moral Philosophy.

3 People with whom I would like to dine: French Mathematician Alexandre Grothendieck (mathematician, pacifist, beekeeper), Laurence Olivier (to interrogate him on his favourite role), Trevor Manuel (I have a few suggestions)

Occupation: Still a Student

How do I know LT: This question should be inverted to “how does LT know me”. I guess she first got to know me when she was just the 2 weeks old – I swatted her head with a small wooden hammer and she has not really been the same since.

Favourite quote: De gustibus non est disputandum

Update: A few readers have emailed to ask me why I chose L’etranger, and not say La Peste or even La Chute. I direct these readers to my favourite quotation

yours in good faith,
